Brazil just dropped this bomb on you all – Windy City Riot 2008 Vidcast! If you loved last years event and edit I’m sure you will love this one as well. Yes there has been a lack of audio shows on Revival but people just are not listening in like they are tuning into the videos so for now we are focusing on vidcasts – but we are not going anywhere. Keep reading after the jump for a write up on the event.

You can also check it out on our youtube page if you so desire. Thanks again to Brazil for the sick edit!

Windy City Riot 2008

Those who came to the Windy City Riot this year got exactly what they’d expect. Interesting spots, run-ins with the police, sticky weather, amazing skating, wild after-parties –”all things blade”. Seven years running, the WCR has once again proven to be one of the best street contest to attend every summer in North America. The purse totaled just under a whopping $500.

This year the WCR returned to a two-day format. On the first day, everyone joined in a celebration of all things strange. The flatland contest was won by Justin “Jefferson” Augustus from Iowa. You may remember Jefferson as being one of the “most innovative” winners from years past. Then comes Antone. Anthony “Antone” Anderson (Chicago, IL) stole the high-jump title from the previously undefeated Paul John (cleared 53″ clean and 55.5″ with a brush on the pole), dunk contest (cannot explain in words) and tied the long jump contest with Matt Strobot (Cary, IL) at 223″. After all was said and done, the pre-contest proved to be one of the most exciting collection rollerblading moments of my life. We finished off the first day by skating a launch to metal planter. Too many kids to name skated amazingly however, it seems that Kruise Sapstein tore this spot harder than anyone else–especially after landing a fakie 540 topsoul to gap out. Many props to Kruise.

The beginning of day two was a “chest”. It was pouring rain and a huge event took place right near the meeting spot with forced the contest to be moved to, that’s right, lower wacker–Chicago’s depths of hell. We fashioned a launch ramp made of plywood to skate a high handicap rail. This was a great time until the biker cops rolled up and started giving everybody (myself included) $60 parking tickets. We, of course, moved on to the next spot. Walt Disney Magnet Elementary was a good solid spot with many skaters lacing tricks and many spectators yelling “Aaaaahhhh!”’s…as you should find in any good street contest. The nicest police officer in Chicago politely asked us to move on so we did. The final spot allowed for some interesting tricks to be done. This kink rail next to a ledge wrecked some and made a hero of others. Casey Bohrnell broke his ankle and John Adams may have broken his wrist. The contest proved to be a battle between Jeph Howard and Derek Larson. Derek landed the best trick of the contest by stalling the fence, dropping to a fakie roll on the ledge then dropping blind to top soul on the rail. For a better idea of what happened at the final spot, you’d have to see the footage. Here are the results:

1st – Jeph Howard (MN)
2nd – Derek Larson (MN)
3rd – Kruise Sapstein (IL)
4th – Logan Clark (IA)
5th – Brian Bruno (IL)

Best Trick- Derek Larson
Best Style- Kruise Sapstein
Worst Fall/Scariest to Watch- Dave Depew
Most Innovative – John Adams
Way Cool- Aaron Peterson

“The Last Hurrah competition in Athens, OH did not go exactly as planned. After being kicked out of our three competition spots during warmups, and running out of options, the contest was cancelled and everyone agreed to just skate for fun and just have a good time. Enjoy my edit of the day, and I would like to thank Rolling Revival, Oke Clothing, and John Hoch for making the edit and event possible.”

The Last Hurrah 2008 Report

June 21, 2008

The day started out like any other for me…EARLY. Sleep in Saturday? Nope, woke up at 8:00 am to get ready to head down to Athens, Ohio for a day I had hoped to be filled with good times and good people.

Friends started to trickle in to the Athens City Skatepark around 11:00am. As each started to arrive I quickly learned that a good number came out to watch the contest. Only a few came to actually skate and be judged to win money. It was when I hit this wall of, What if I don’t have enough people show up? What will I do?” Thank goodness the REAL reason we all get together is to skate and share stories since we last saw one another. So making a decision to have the day end up being a session rather than competition was an easy adjustment for everyone that came out.

I still wanted to follow the same route of spots to make the day go by hopefully a little more smooth than just picking and choosing spots.  But thanks to “Johnny Law” they seemed to make the decisions for us. We were busted by Ohio University Police at the first spot, which were ledges underneath OU’s Music Building. So that took care of any other campus spots I had in mind. The second was located at Athens High School which was everyone’s favorite wavy handi-rail. Due to an Annual Bee Keepers Association meeting taking place our fun was put to a timely halt by one angry Bee Keeper. Luckily a couple of the girls with us made it out alive from their little hive in time with some honey from one nice old man who gladly gave to them for free, wish he had more pull in the bee hive than the ass that kicked us out.  So with us basically kicked out of Athens we hopped into our gas guzzling automobiles to ride ten miles up to Hocking College, our last hope. Within five minutes of everyone arriving and getting out of their cars Hocking College’s hope for a better tomorrow also known as the rent-a-cop came out to tell us the age old story, “I don’t care, but the people who sign my checks want you to leave.” So down but not out we huddled together to see if there was anything else left out there to skate because we had a good amount of sun light to burn. While our brains bounced ideas off one another, Dax tried to hop on with Hocking College’s construction crew, but was met with WTF expressions from the hardened men. Thankfully Jeff and Mike knew about some old rails underneath some over passes back in Athens. So once again we piled into our cars and drove back to Athens to skate a nice handi-rail on a bike path near the Hocking River. Other than the occasional bicycle enthusiast we had the little safe haven we had been looking for.

All day long people kept a positive attitude which is what kept us going when we were booted and banished for doing something we love and are passionate about. The way I see it, everyone won on that day. We did not let anything get in the way of our good time. It is always a wonderful experience to host an event like this. When I found out no one really wanted to skate in the contest I was a little hurt. But having my friends there helped me see it is not about a contest, judging people on who is better or not, it is about all of us getting together to have a good time and do what we love, skate.

When I first envisioned this event, I wanted it to be about people coming together from different walks of life to do something we all find enjoyment in. Contest are great, our sport has a good thing going with the AIL and they should be supported. So from here on out The Last Hurrah will fall on Labor Day weekend as originally intended. To be a weekend before life gets boggled down by obligations to work or school where we can meet up with friends and skate. No need for judges or prize money. No sponsor could ever dish out what we all got out of this past Saturday. We as rollerbladers never give up when faced with diversity. We were told not to skate. We did anyway.

See you next year!!

- Hoch

Mixing the audio for the edit. Have to keep it professional.

Ok, bags are packed and we caravan 14 people in 2 cars. 5 Hour drive total from Chicago to Columbus. But of course, it wouldn’t be a rollerblading trip without rain and snow storms and lets not forget the ever-so-convenient flat tire and 3 hour towing service that ends up costing us $150 already and we have yet to arrive at the hotel.

We are now all at the hotel, have already setup the computer/editing studio in our room and are about to leave for the skatepark. Will upload many more images soon.

Here is some news from Mike Rios over at E. Also sorry for delay on the latest episode Adrian has a new job and is hella busy – Plus we also have to edit the Slamm Jam & KOBK vidcasts! But after 26 is up ep27 should have some of the Exclusives on the podcast as guests which should be fun. Let’s hope all goes to plan!

The Exclusives in conjunction with Rolling Revival, Boarderline Skatepark, Denial Clothing, GenreWheels, Neglected Truth, and UBIQ are hosting this week’s Thursday Night Session, and want you to come out and skate with us!

If you are waiting on a show – we have one lined up… Adrian is just back from filming for Revival at the Kill or be killed contest in Arizona! So we can only do one at a time and we know you love your vidcasts!

In the show you will be able to hear if you won some Undercover Wheels and we will also be giving away a copy of the sick Japanese DVD Bloodstained Concrete. We got the lowdown on new Sifika liners, USD Feinberg’s, new Stygma products as well as info on [B]unique from Fish just to name a few. We hope you enjoy this – it’s new to us and to you I assume, I also would personally like thank Ben Sach for filming the tricks, interviews & editing – so we owe this Episode to him.
